Flora and Fauna
Greece has an amazing amount of Flora and Fauna. The reason for this is that 80% of Greece is covered in forests and mountains. There are thousands of uninhabited islands and miles of Wetlands, Lakes and Lagoons. These habitats offer an ecosystem with a large biodiversity. This allows the wildlife to flourish undisturbed by the human population.
There are approximately 30,000 species of fauna in Greece. Some of these species include the Lynx, Wild Boar, Grey Wolf and Re Deer. The Pindus mountains also has the largest Brown Bear habitat in Europe.
The Avifauna recorded in Greece include 442 species. Some of these species include the Black Woodpecker, the Golden Eagle, the Booted Eagle, Eagle Owl and the Egyptian Vulture. The Egyptian Vulture covers more than 4000 km each year to reach its wintering grounds in Africa. Only to return to Greece the following spring. The survival of the Egyptian Vulture is among the main conservation challenges of our times and is now more urgent than ever.
The Greek government, since 1938 have made large areas of the mountains and islands into National Parks. This is to preserve the delicate ecosystems and protect the endangered species. Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece. It was one of the first mountains to be made into a National Park. It has great ecological importance, but it also has historical and archaeological importance. Golden eagles fly around its peaks and wolves and wild cats wonder through its forests.
Zagori in the Pindus mountains has two National Parks. The Central and North part of the area is covered by extensive, tall forests of Black Pine, King Boris Fir, beech and Bosnian Pine. These forests are also important nesting sites for Raptors.
On a yacht charter holiday, you will be able to see a lot of the Flora and Fauna. You will visit some of the uninhabited islands where the Turtles swim with their young. Or where the Monk Seal sunbath on a rock by the sea. You may even be lucky and be visited by Dolphins while cruising around the islands.
Greece has an amazing variety of flora and fauna, both on land and out at sea. A unique geographical location is one of the reasons for this wealth of nature.
