The Luxury Yacht “Glaros” is a 22-meter Wooden Motor Sailing Yacht. She was built in Perama, near Piraeus in 1977. She started life as a charter boat, but the company went out of business. She was then bought and used as a ferry, running between Parga and Paxos. Parga is on the North West coast of the Greek mainland. Paxos is a small island just South of Corfu, off the West coast. Glaros had one engine then, a 250 HP Mercedes. The law, required that she had two engines, to work as a passenger carrying ferry. So the Mercedes engine was move over onto the Port side. A new 310 HP MAN engine was fitted onto the starboard side. This engine also run a dynamo type generator.
In 1990 Glaros was bought by a diving school in Corfu. For 8 years she used to carry holiday makers to a dive site, for try dives. Try dives are when complete beginners try diving in the sea off a beach. In 1998 the tourist industry in Greece started to decline and Glaros became an expensive overhead. She was put up for sale and sat neglected, on a jetty for a few years. She was then bought by her present owner. Who, over a period of 12 years, rebuilt her and turned her into the beautiful Luxury Charter Yacht she is today. Read my blog post, how I became the proud owner.
Glaros lay neglected on a jetty in a small harbour in Ipsos, Corfu for several years. This is not good for a wooden boat. Wood moves with the changes in the weather and cracks appear in the deck. Then the rain pours in through the cracks, into the boat and causes the wood to rot. Glaros was stripped from the inside out, until she was a bear hull. Any rotten planks or ribs where replaced. A new deck was laid and a new interior was built.
Glaros is a big heavy displacement yacht, she is extremely well built, making her strong and safe at sea. This also means her large hull makes for a roomy boat. She now has 5 double cabins, with en-suit bathrooms. The crew of 4 are accommodated in a separate cabin in the stern. The cabins have beautifully varnished Mahogany panelling. The outside has gleaming stainless steel rails and fittings. Glaros has an MCA coding and a Greek safety certificate.
There is no better way to see the Greek Islands, than on a charter yacht. You will be traveling around the islands on-board your own floating, 5-star hotel. You could visit a different island each day. Just relax and admire the view, or have a go at some of the activities on-board or ashore.
