A Travel Guide Santorini, one of the most famous Islands in all of Greece.
Santorini is one of Greece’s top locations, but many people know very little about it. So, for anyone who needs a top-up of Santorini knowledge, we’ve got you covered.
Travel Guide Santorini and its History
Over 3,000 years ago, the island now known Santorini was nothing more than a volatile oceanic volcano sitting far and away off the coast of Crete. It had the makings of small settlements developing on its shores, but nothing like the great cities on many of its neighbouring islands. In roughly 1,600 B.C, the bubbling volcano erupted violently, in one of the biggest natural catastrophes in human history, annihilating anything in its path.
The force of the eruption was so great, that the volcano itself collapsed, falling into a deep caldera around which the islands of Santorini now sit. Before it fell however, the lava spewed into the sea and created the islands we now know and love, changing the landscape forever. Over the millenniums that followed, Santorini became a hive of Greek civilization, and that popularity has continued to the present day.
Why Visit Santorini?
- Violent volcanic eruptions have a habit of forming rough and rocky terrain, not the best for building on, but perfect for a good hike. The many trails of Santorini are fraught with wonders, which brings us to our next reason to visit.
- The Views. Given its location in the heart of the Mediterranean, it will come as no surprise that Santorini boasts some of the most incredible views available anywhere in the world. From its dark cliff tops, visitors can see far out onto the horizon, and are treated to some of the most incredible sunsets imaginable.
- Thanks to its unique nature, Santorini is not home to white sandy beaches, but instead those of red and black. Unusual? Yes, but an incredible sight nonetheless.
- Finally, we have the reason Santorini is most famous for, its towns. The architecture of the island’s main towns, such as Oia and Fira, is legendary. Simplistic white exteriors topped with soft blue domes, their quiet streets are wondrous to explore.
Flights to Santorini are available, although getting there varies in difficulty depending on where you live. Flights outside of Europe will almost always require changes, and even flights with different airlines. Some European countries do offer direct options, but they tend to be the more expensive choice. If you are lucky enough to live or be in Greece already, then you’ll have no issue getting a flight over to this beautiful place. However, to really get the best from Santorini, you need to approach it by boat. Sailing into that stunning blue lagoon, gazing up at the pristine white towns as they come into view, gleaming in the sunlight against the dark and haunting backdrop of Santorini shores. It’s simply unmissable.
