Visiting Greece For Your Holidays
Sun, sea and sumptuous food – there’s three things that we all crave during our holidays. So it’s no wonder that nearly over 15 million people pack their suitcases and they are visiting Greece every year.
But what keeps them coming back time and time again? Is it the climate? The culture? The cuisine? When we stopped off at some of the Greek islands during one of our last chartered cruises, I asked around to find out.
The same five answers kept coming up time and time again – so here they are. Five reasons that you need to visit Greece!
While the Greek mainland’s mountains mean that it’s cooler than other Mediterranean destinations, the Ionian islands are nothing short of a sun-worshiper paradise!
Crystal blue seas, dazzling white sands and days that melt into long balmy evenings. This makes the islands a perfect destination for anyone trading murky grey skies for Greece’s blue ones. And if you see the islands by sea, you’ll never be forced to stick to just one beach!
If the only Greek food you can name is a gyros kebab, you’re in for an amazing experience when you step ashore on one of the Ionian islands. Fresh seafood, sun-ripened vegetables and world-famous Greek olives are on offer in nearly every taverna. Perfect for late evening meals washed down with glasses of local wine or a sip of Ouzo. Also on-board our yacht, your crew will be happy to create the freshest meals you’ve tasted – especially if you have a fisherman in your party!
Beware though – once you’ve tasted honest, authentic Greek food, you’ll never be able to settle for supermarket Taramasalata or Moussaka ever again.
You could describe a cruise around the Greek islands as your very own Odyssey – and with good reason! Greece boasts a history stretching back thousands of years, filled with tales of heroes such as Jason, Odysseus and Heracles – and the islands are full of reminders of these ancient times.
Of course, Greece’s modern culture may have less Minotaur’s, but it more than makes up for it with Corfu’s nightlife, Cephalonia’s vineyards and Zakynthos’ natural beauty spots. No matter how you choose to spend your holiday, you’ll find something to love when visiting Greece.
Chartering a yacht in Greece gives you access to some truly great adventures – both on the sea and under it. Greece’s clear seas are famed for their sweeping underwater vistas, which is why so-many thrill-seekers visit the islands for scuba diving and snorkelling trips.
Our yacht crew is full of scuba experts, so we’re inclined to agree when visitors to Greece claim that this is home to some of the greatest dive spots in the whole world.
Open any guidebook, and they’ll tell you the same thing. Greeks are ‘exceptionally friendly.’ You’ll hear no argument from me! It’s as if life in these idyllic surroundings give the Greek people a sunny outlook on life – and who could blame them.
In fact, many of the visitors to Greece that I speak to point out that the friendly welcome they receive from the locals is the main reason that they return to the islands year after year!
If you’re looking for a cold, wet holiday where the people are miserable and the food is awful, I don’t know where to recommend. But if you want to enjoy stunning scenery, thousands of years of history, wonderful food and the friendliest people in the world, I think you know exactly what you need to do…
